Hillary Clinton, the former US senator, first lady and Secretary of State, has formally declared her candidacy for the White House and crack what she has called “the highest and hardest glass ceiling” to become the first female to join the pantheon of American commanders-in-chief. Mrs Clinton, who is 67, thus becomes the first Democrat officially to throw her hat into the ring for 2016. She was expected to follow her announcement with trips to the first caucus state of Iowa and thereafter this week to New Hampshire which, as usual, will hold the first primary voting contests early next year.
