Renowned actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. Their bodies, along with one of their dogs, were discovered by a maintenance worker who had not heard from the couple for about two weeks. Hackman was found near the kitchen in a mudroom, appearing to have fallen suddenly, while Arakawa was discovered in the bathroom near scattered prescription pills and a space heater. Both bodies showed signs of advanced decomposition, suggesting they may have been there for weeks.

Initial assessments did not indicate foul play; however, authorities have deemed the deaths “suspicious” due to the circumstances. Hackman’s daughter, Leslie Anne Hackman, mentioned that she hadn’t spoken to her father and stepmother for a few months but noted that her father was in good health and continued to practice yoga and Pilates. The family speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning might be the cause, but investigations revealed no signs of gas leaks in the home.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department reported no signs of forced entry or blunt force trauma, and the house was otherwise in order. Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that while no foul play is suspected, the exact cause of death has not been determined, and a thorough investigation is underway.
Gene Hackman was celebrated for his illustrious career in films such as “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” Tributes from Hollywood and dignitaries have poured in, honoring his significant contributions to cinema.
