GOP lawmaker to file censure resolution against Crockett over Abbott comments

Republican Representative Randy Weber of Texas has announced plans to introduce a censure resolution against Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett, also from Texas, following remarks she made about Governor Greg Abbott. During a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles, Crockett referred to Abbott, who has used a wheelchair since 1984, as “Governor Hot Wheels” and described him as a “hot a** mess.”

Weber’s proposed resolution characterizes Crockett’s comments as “discriminatory in nature” and part of “a continued series of inappropriate comments expressed by the representative from Texas.” He emphasized that such rhetoric is unacceptable in Congress.

In response, Crockett clarified that her remarks were aimed at criticizing Abbott’s policies, particularly his actions involving the transportation of migrants to cities led by Black mayors, and not his disability. She stated, “At no point did I mention or allude to his condition.”

The incident has drawn attention from various political figures. Senator John Cornyn labeled Crockett’s comments as “shameful,” while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton described them as “despicable.”
