James Poised for First England Start Since 2022

Reece James Set for First England Start in Over Two Years

Chelsea right-back Reece James is set to make his long-awaited return to England’s starting lineup for the first time since September 2022 in Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who was a surprising omission in England’s 2-0 win over Albania on Friday, is also in contention for a starting spot.

Defensive Changes on the Cards

James was brought on in the final minute against Albania but is now expected to start. Guehi, a key figure in England’s Euro 2024 final run, was left out in favor of Dan Burn and Ezri Konsa, but he could reclaim his place against Latvia.

Burn’s performance against Albania received mixed reviews, sparking speculation about whether he will retain his place.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel has kept the squad guessing, delaying the announcement of his starting XI until late afternoon—similar to the Albania fixture, where the lineup wasn’t revealed until midday.

Squad Adjustments & Omissions

Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento has been omitted from the matchday squad, having remained an unused substitute against Albania.

Tuchel selected a 26-man squad for the double-header, but UEFA regulations allow only 23 players on a matchday squad.

As a Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) and Jarell Quansah (Liverpool) return.

Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) and Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton) are left out.

Gordon has returned to Newcastle due to injury, while Ramsdale, once again, misses out.

Tuchel’s Focus on Team Balance

Tuchel defended his selections, emphasizing the need for chemistry and cohesion rather than simply picking the most talented players.

“We have to get the process right to build the best group. That means some very good players might be left out,” Tuchel said.

“Playing qualifiers is one thing, but tournament football is a completely different challenge. We need the right team—not just the 26 most talented players.”

With England fine-tuning their squad for the road ahead, all eyes will be on James and Guehi as they aim to cement their places for the bigger battles to come.
