South Korean Singer Wheesung Found Dead at 43

Renowned South Korean ballad singer Wheesung was found dead at his home in Seoul on Monday. He was 43 years old.

Authorities confirmed that he was discovered in a state of cardiac arrest, adding that a significant amount of time had passed before his body was found. However, they noted that no signs of foul play were present at the scene.

A Legacy in Music

Wheesung, whose real name was Choi Whee-sung, debuted in 2002 and quickly rose to stardom with his soulful voice. He became one of the biggest R&B artists of the 2000s, credited with introducing the genre to the South Korean mainstream. His emotionally charged ballads and smooth vocals won him a devoted fan base.

Beyond his own music, Wheesung mentored and trained several K-pop stars, also writing songs for top artists. His influence stretched beyond South Korea, as he performed at K-pop concerts worldwide, including in Hollywood.

He was scheduled to perform this weekend in Daegu alongside fellow ballad singer KCM.

Career Highs and Personal Struggles

Wheesung’s music earned praise from legendary Korean artists, including Shin Seung-hun and Seo Tae-ji. However, his career was not without controversy.

In 2021, he received a two-year suspended sentence for abusing propofol, a powerful anesthetic, which was also linked to the death of Michael Jackson.

Additionally, in March and April 2020, he was found unconscious twice due to the use of etomidate, another sleep-inducing drug similar to propofol. Syringes and vials were found at the scene in both instances.

Tributes Pour In

Following news of his passing, fellow artists and fans paid tribute to Wheesung’s talent and legacy.

Singer Yoon Min-soo shared a heartfelt message:
“Wheesung, let’s sing and make music freely in that place. I won’t forget your pure and clear heart. Let’s meet again someday and sing together.”

Rapper Verbal Jint posted a black square on Instagram with the caption:
“Every moment we shared was an honor, and I’m grateful. You’ve worked so hard. Rest in peace, Wheesung.”

As the South Korean music industry mourns his loss, fans remember Wheesung not just for his music but for the deep emotions he brought to every performance. His legacy as a pioneer of R&B in South Korea will not be forgotten.
